Ahmad Muhammad’s YMCA Volunteering Blog

Why We Volunteer

Volunteering is important it is not only a great way to give back to the community, but it is also an opportunity to search for future jobs and internships. Volunteer work also helps bring perspective to what the average worker goes through on a daily of working that job. Volunteering also helps teach us different skills that we never experienced or learned before. I helped volunteer at a local YMCA in Chicago. The YMCA is a non profit Organization. I truely enjoyed my time volunteering here. It really gave me a sense of how it’s like to be a coach.

Purpose of Program

The main purpose of this program was to teach kids how to play basketball while also implementing lessons throughout like team work and hard work. There were 4 other staff members who helped along in the process. The children were broken up into teams where they would learn different skills of the game of basketball. Towards the end of the program there was a scrimmage. After the scrimmage, everyone came together and ate pizza.

My Responsibility’s

I was responsible for coaching a group of children, and teaching them how to play the game of basketball, while also implementing certain skills. Skills that promote team work and hard work. I set up cones for them to practice dribbling. Also I set up lay up lines so they could practice shooting and laying the ball up. The children were very excited and ecstatic to play basketball. I was surprised by the way they listened to instructions well. There was no training for this volunteer position. However, there was a interview process that took quite some time. The benefits of this program was I am now able to put this on my resume. Also, there was free lunch for participating and helping out. If allowed to come back again I would. I really enjoyed my experience there.

If Put In Charge

If I was put in charge of this program I would open it up more to the public. Allowing more children to come out and learn about the game of basketball and play the game of basketball. This allows for children to meet new people and build on working with others. While also sharing a free meal. Also, I would probably make this program longer than a day. I would probably at least make it a week program where children could come and learn the game of basketball.

Learning About Myself

I learned that I am more interactive than I thought I was. I’ve always thought of Myself as a quiet person. However, with this program it brought out the vocal side of me more. Allowing me to communicate and work with everyone. I would recommend prolonging the program and Adding more days to the program.
